It seems Jada Pinkett-Smith has been a trending topic since the 94th Academy Awards ceremony, where her shaved head was the object of Chris Rock’s infamous joke. A lot of discussion about alopecia has emerged among all of this controversy.
Hair loss due to alopecia can affect an individual’s scalp or body and can either be temporary or permanent. It is often credited to genetics, hormonal changes, or medical conditions.
Let’s reflect on when Jada first started to become vocal about her experience with this common condition.
The reason why Jada shaved her head
Back in 2018, the actress revealed that she had been dealing with hair loss on an episode of her show Red Table Talk. She said she was once terrified when handfuls of hair came off in the shower, she explained that she underwent multiple tests to figure out why she was losing her hair, without being able to get a definite answer.
She stated: “I really had to put it in a spiritual perspective of like, the higher power takes so much from people,” she continued. “People are out here who have cancer. People have sick children. I watch the higher power take things every day, and by golly, if the higher power wants to take your hair? That’s it? God, you want my hair? When I looked at it from that perspective, it really did settle me.”
Finally, in 2021 the actress posted a picture of her freshly shaved head alongside her daughter Willow Smith, who sometimes likes to rock a buzz cut herself. The caption read:
“Willow made me do it because it was time to let go BUT… my 50’s are bout to be Divinely lit with this shed.”
It took years of hard work to embrace her hair loss, but has openly been talking about her struggles with alopecia since.
The start of a beautiful ritual: acceptance
In 2021, she stated: “It was just time. I was just ready for that kind of expression and release. I’m so glad I did it. It was such a beautiful experience and such a freedom. I feel more connected to myself and to the great diving in a very special way.”
Feeling confident and comfortable in your own skin is essential to your well-being. It’s comforting to know that with today’s technology, the choice to have hair or not is a reality that opens up many possibilities.
