What causes shedding of hair?

Hair shedding can be caused by several factors, the most common causes include hereditary conditions such as androgenetic alopecia. Other causes include telogen effluvium, a condition triggered by significant stressors like childbirth, major surgery, severe stress, or rapid weight loss, leading to an increase in the number of hairs in the resting phase of the hair cycle.

What is the shedding effect?

If you are losing hair, and recently have had hair treatment or hair graft, don’t worry, it’s normal! This phase is called a shedding effect or shock loss. It is a hair transition through which the hair follicle passes. Remember that the hair goes through three phases: anagen phase (growth), catagen phase (transition or rest), and telogen phase (fall).

How do I know if I have it?

You must differentiate between normal hair loss vs heavy loss. The average normal hair loss is 50 to 100 units daily, when these amounts are exceeded is known as telogen effluvium. We understand that there is no way to account for this, but you can tell if the hair you see coming off is larger than usual.

Your scalp that has undergone a hair procedure now needs to get used to these new healthy hair follicles. Hair growth slows during this phase, relax and wait for it to happen.

When does shedding start and how long does it last?

The normal duration of this effect is usually one month, but in some cases, it lasts up to three months. In hair transplantation, this phase appears in the transplanted hair after the first month of the procedure and can last a few weeks or even months.

A common mistake of many patients is to pause the process because they think it is not working. You must go to a specialized clinic with hair experts to explain how your hair will evolve, you have nothing to be alarmed about!

Do all people go through this effect?

Many of the hair follicles stop their growth phase and restart their cycle: fall, rest and growth, which causes hair loss. Normally, almost all patients experience this phase, but if you do not go through this effect you should not worry, as it has no relation to the final result.
